Quistello

The wines with the protected geographical indication "Quistello" include three types: White (also Sparkling), Red (also Sparkling and Novello), Rosé (also Sparkling).


Grapes

The "Quistello" PGI is reserved for wines produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Lombardy. The specification of the vine is only possible by using at least 85% of the corresponding grapes. The remaining 15% can be obtained from other grape varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Lombardy.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with the protected geographical indication "Quistello" have a straw yellow colour, a pleasant, harmonious aroma and a typical, full, sometimes sweet taste. Red, on the other hand, has a ruby red colour, more or less intense, even tending towards garnet, with a vinous, harmonious aroma and a typical, savoury flavour. The Novello is distinguished by its red colour, its fruity, young and pleasant bouquet and its dry and fresh flavour. Finally, the Rosé is pink in colour, combined with a delicate, pleasant aroma and a dry, harmonious flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10% vol. for all types except Novello (11% vol.).


Grape production area

The production area is located in the Oltre Po Mantovano and includes a lowland area with an altitude of between 7 and 20 metres above sea level.


Specificity and historical notes

Virgil, originally from Mantua, in the fifth Bucolica, describes in detail the Vitis Labrusca of more than two thousand years ago. The wine production of the area was then developed in a consistent manner at the end of the eleventh century by Benedictine monks, particularly in the abbey of Polirone in San Benedetto Po.
