Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa

The Protected Designation of Origin "Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa" identifies different types of wine: white (also sparkling and Spumante), classic white (also sparkling) and red (also sparkling and Novello). Then there are the wines with the indication of grape variety, with the respective variants (sparkling, Spumante and Passito): Sauvignon, Malvasia, Pinot, Chardonnay, Lambrusco, Lambrusco Grasparossa, Lambrusco Montericco Rosso, Lambrusco Montericco Rosé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marzemino, Malbo Gentile, Spergola.


Grapes

The white wines are produced with grapes from vineyards composed, at least for 85%, of Spergola vine, while for the red is required a minimum 50% of Marzenino combined with a 35% of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbo Gentile. Wines with an indication of the vine variety, on the other hand, must be produced with a minimum share of 85% of the grapes of those specific varieties. Exceptions are Pinot (100% Pinot Grigio, black and/or white), Spergola (100% Spergola) and Lambrusco (85% share reached with three types of Lambrusco: Maestri, Marani, Salamino and Barghi). In all types, when necessary, for the remaining portion, may compete either the grapes expressly indicated in the product specification or other berry varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Emilia Romagna.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines (vol. 10,5-11%) of the denomination have a straw yellow colour and are fresh and harmonious, with characteristic perfumes and flavours, influenced by the reference vine (tastier in the sparkling variants). The reds from Lambrusco are typically sparkling and fragrant, with notes from fruity to floral. The reds (vol. 10,5-12%) obtained from other vines, on the other hand, are firm, with a harmonious, full, soft and fruity taste. In the product specification, moreover, are identified with precision all the organoleptic characteristics associated with each type, as well as the peculiarities of the versions Passito, Novello and Riserva.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with a small portion of the province of Reggio Emilia.


Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the area of the denomination has a long attestation, which starts from the Roman era and goes through the middle Ages.
