Casteggio

"Casteggio" is the Protected Designation of Origin that identifies the homonymous Lombardo red wine and its variant Riserva.

Grapes

Casteggio wines are born from the encounter between the grapes of the Barbera vine, present for at least 65% of the total, and those of Croatina, Uva Rara, Ughetta (Vespolina) and Pinot Nero which, alone or together, can reach a maximum of 35%.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Casteggio, like its Riserva variant, is a wine with an intense ruby hue, sometimes embellished with purplish or garnet reflections. It has an ethereal, delicate and complex olfactory yield: you can perceive fragrances of red fruits, violets and spices. The taste is dry, harmonious and very full-bodied. Overall, it is a wine with an important structure, with good acidity and medium-long persistence. The minimum alcoholic strength shall be 12,5% vol.

Grape production area

The production area is part of the larger area called Oltrepò Pavese, known as one of the best in the world for the production of wines, thanks to a successful combination of environmental and geological characteristics.

Specificity and historical notes

A first certain trace of viticulture in the territory of Casteggio dates back to 222 BC, a period in which this large agricultural area was under the domination of the Romans. In the Middle Ages, then, the evidence becomes more abundant and you get to the identification of local wine, with precise characteristics and quality.
