Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, is a white wine produced in the basic version, Spumante and in the Passito versions, with a Classic and Classic superiore mention.


Grapes

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi wines are produced using grapes from vineyards composed, for at least 85%, of Verdicchio vine, possibly associated with other white grapes, suitable for cultivation in the Marche, up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The wines of the denomination have a straw yellow colour, more or less light; the aroma is characteristic and delicate and accompanies a dry and harmonious taste, enhanced by a pleasantly bitterish aftertaste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume ranges from 11.5% vol. in the basic and Classico versions, to 12% vol. in the Classico Superiore. Passito and Spumante, on the other hand, have slightly different organoleptic characteristics. Passito (15% vol.) is an intense straw yellow colour, tending towards amber; its aroma is characteristic and intense and its taste harmonious and velvety, from sweet to sweet. The sparkling wine has the same straw-yellow hue, but enriched by greenish reflections; the aroma is delicate, fine, broad and composite; the flavour is savoury and fresh, fine and harmonious, from extrabrut to dry.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with part of the Esino river basin, divided between the provinces of Ancona and Macerata.


Specificity and historical notes

The viticulture of Ancona is closely linked to the history of the Camaldolese and Benedictine monks, who reintroduced and strengthened the vine in many lands.
