Trebbiano d'Abruzzo

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Trebbiano d'Abruzzo" identifies the homonymous white wine and its variants Superiore and Riserva.


Grapes

For the production of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wines is prescribed the use of grapes from vineyards consisting mainly (at least 85%) of vines Trebbiano Abruzzese, Bombino Bianco and / or Trebbiano Toscano, present alone or together. The remaining quota, which may not exceed 15%, can be obtained from other white grapes suitable for cultivation in Abruzzo.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The basic version of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11.5% vol.) is straw yellow, with a characteristic aroma and an intense and delicate bouquet; the flavour is dry, savoury, velvety and harmonious. In the Superiore (12% vol.) and Riserva (12.5% vol.) versions, the same characteristics of appearance and olfactory notes are found, while on the palate there is a pleasantly almond aftertaste.


Grape production area

The production area is quite extensive, covering an important part of Abruzzo: the coastal and foothill hilly strip, with the addition of the internal areas of the Alto Tirino plateau, the Subequana Valley, the Peligna Valley and the Roveto Valley.


Specificity and historical notes

Trebbiano is a typical grape variety of Central Italy, already widespread in Roman times, whose name derives from the Latin trebulanus, adjective of trebula, which means "farmhouse" or "farm". Literally, therefore, Trebbiano would be a homemade, family wine.
