Sizzano

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Sizzano" identifies the homonymous red wine and its Riserva variant.

Grapes

The two types of "Sizzano" wine are produced from grapes from vineyards mainly composed of Nebbiolo (Spanna), present with a share between 50% and 70%, Vespolina and Uva Rara, which alone or together can represent an additional portion between 30% and 50%. If necessary, up to a maximum of 10%, other non-aromatic red grapes suitable for cultivation in Piemonte may be used.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Sizzano" wines are parched and savoury, with a particularly harmonious taste and with a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 12% vol. The appearance is ruby red, with garnet highlights, while the aroma is characteristic and winy, fine and pleasant, enhanced by slight hints of violet. In the Riserva variant, the flavour is enriched by a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Grape production area

The production area coincides only with the municipality of Sizzano, a village that stands at the foot of a small hilly complex, which slopes down to the river Sesia.

Specificity and historical notes

Although its origins are ancient and appreciated, Sizziese wine owes its great fame to an illustrious figure of the Italian 1800s: Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour, who owned several farms.
