Riviera Ligure di Ponente

"Riviera Ligure di Ponente" is a Protected Designation of Origin that identifies five types of wine with indication of grape variety: Granaccia (also Superiore and Passito), Moscato (also Sparkling, Vendemmia Tardiva and Passito), Pigato (also Sparkling, Vendemmia Tardiva and Passito), Rossese (also Passito) and Vermentino (also Sparkling, Vendemmia Tardiva and Passito). The product specification also provides for the commercialisation of the following sub-areas: Riviera dei Fiori, Albenganese, Finalese, Quiliano and Taggia.

Grapes

All types of "Riviera Ligure di Ponente" wines must be produced with a prevalence of grapes from vines indicated on the label. The percentages required, however, are variable: 90% for Granaccia and Rossese, 100% for Moscato, 95% for Pigato and Vermentino. The remaining quotas may be obtained from other non-aromatic grape varieties of similar colour.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Riviera Ligure di Ponente" wines, even in their variegated character, have some common organoleptic characteristics. For example, they stand out for their good acidity and for their appearance, which is always enriched by intense and lively colours. The whites show fresh, dry and soft flavors, while the reds are warm and full-bodied. In all types, moreover, you can see a good and balanced structure and a slightly bitter aftertaste. An in-depth study of the characteristics of each wine can be done by relying on the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area is located in the eastern part of Liguria. The “Riviera di Ponente”, overlooking the Mediterranean, is characterized by the succession of narrow valleys and steep slopes.

Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the “Riviera di Ponente” was born in the Middle Ages but strengthened only during the 18th century. Its origins are probably related to the role of sailors who frequented the area and who imported the vines of other territories.
