Orvietano Rosso

The Protected Designation of Origin "Orvietano Rosso" "Rosso Orvietano"; identifies a particular quality of red wines, produced both in the basic version and in some variants of single-variety: Aleatico, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sangiovese.

Grapes

For the production of Rosso Orvietano are used grapes from vineyards composed, for at least 70%, of the vines Aleatico, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo R. , Ciliegiolo, Merlot, Montepulciano, Pinot Noir and Sangiovese, present alone or in combination. The remaining share, up to a maximum of 30%, may consist of other red grapes suitable for cultivation in Umbria. The vines listed above, with the exception of Montepulciano, are also those used for the production of single-variety Rosso Orvietano and in these cases represent 85% of the blend.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Rosso Orvietano wine has a ruby red colour, rather lively and intense, sometimes veined with violet reflections. The aroma is just as intense, vinous and sometimes herbaceous, while the taste is soft, elegant and velvety. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 11,5%. In the single-varietal variants, the basic characteristics are enriched with further organoleptic characteristics and more or less evident variations, which are punctually described in the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area coincides with a large hilly area located in the south-western part of Umbria.

Specificity and historical notes

The ancient and deep link between the territory of Orvieto and viticulture is witnessed above all by numerous archaeological finds from the Etruscan period: paintings such as those of Golini's tomb and artefacts dedicated to the conservation, serving and tasting of wine.
