Gabiano

"Gabiano" is a red wine from Piemonte, protected by the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). It is produced both in the basic version and in the Riserva version.

Grapes

"Gabiano" wines are made from grapes from vines mainly composed of Barbera (from 90% to 95%), combined with Freisa and Grignolino, which, alone or together, can not exceed the quota from 5% to 10%.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The basic version of "Gabiano" wine has a colouring that can vary from intense ruby red to garnet, especially after a period of ageing. Its aroma is characteristic and winy, while the taste is parched, harmonious and full-bodied. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12% vol. The Riserva variant, on the other hand, is characterized by an intense ruby hue, with garnet reflections due to aging. The aroma is characteristic, intense and ethereal and is combined with a full-bodied, parched, harmonious and velvety taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.5% vol.

Grape production area

Gabiano was born on the hills of Monferrato that slope down towards the Po, in an area within the province of Alessandria, in the territory of only two municipalities.

Specificity and historical notes

From a historical point of view, the area in which Barbera is grown, with which "Gabiano" is produced, has strong barbaric roots. According to some reconstructions, it was they who started the cultivation of this vine (this would also explain the origin of the name), characterized by abundant fruits and therefore by a relative ease of maintenance.
