Native Grape Odyssey presents…“Old Vines of Italy”
Italy is the home of many old vines. From North to South across the peninsula, there are vineyards whose vines are more than 100 years old and ungrafted. This tasting led by VIA Chief Scientist Prof. Attilio Scienza and by Lynne Sherriff MW will explore wines made from old vines in Alto-Adige, Veneto, Sardinia, Campania, Sicily, and Valle d’Aosta. In Alto Adige, Versoaln is a 350-year-old vine cultivated near Castel Katzenzungen, 600 meters on the sea level. Its white grapes produce annually 80 to 100 bottles. In Veneto, in the Valdobbiadene area, old vines of Glera, Bianchetta, Verdisa and Perera yield Prosecco Superiore. These vines do not belong to a single vineyard but are spread all over the Valdobbiadene territory. In Sardinia, the Sulcis area comprises 80- to 150-year-old Carignano vines which were not affected by the phylloxera. In Campania, Aglianico vines in the Taurasi area named “Dal Re” are reputed to be over 150 years old and ungrafted. In Sicily on Etna, the Gurrida ungrafted vine yielding Grenache grapes was allegedly planted around the year 1800 following Admiral Nelson’s orders and survived Phylloxera. Another peculiarity of this vine is that it is at times “submerged” due to floods of the nearby river and lake. In Valle d’Aosta, the prié blanc vines located 1000 meters on the sea level on the slopes of Mont Blanc are the highest in Europe and also ungrafted and pre- phylloxera.

Native Grape Odyssey presents…“The Progeny of Sangiovese: Gaglioppo, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Foglia Tonda”
In this tasting Vinitaly International Academy (VIA) Chief Scientist Prof. Attilio Scienza and VIA Faculty Henry Davar will bring participants on a journey that will connect Tuscany and Emilia with Southern Italy through the genetic history of 5 major red grape varieties and examples of their wines. Prof. Scienza will introduce the tasting by exploring the genetic ties that link the Sangiovese grape with varieties such as Gaglioppo from Calabria, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese from Sicily, and Foglia Tonda (Tuscany). Genetic research has shown that Gaglioppo, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese, and Foglia Tonda can be considered the progeny of Sangiovese. Sangiovese’s genetic pedigree, therefore, is deeply connected with grapes from the South of Italy, which were cultivated in Sicily and Calabria during ancient times by the Greeks who had set-up colonies in those areas (also known as Magna Graecia). Davar will guide participants through the distinctive sensorial notes of wines made with these varieties.
