Epomeo

The "Epomeo" Protected Geographical Indication is reserved for white wines (including sparkling, sweet and raisin wines), red wines (including new, sweet, raisin wines) and rosé wines (including sweet and raisin wines).


Grapes

"Epomeo" PGIs must be obtained from vineyards suitable for cultivation in the province of Naples.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white "Epomeo" PGIs are straw yellow in colour and have a fruity and floral aroma, accompanied by a dry and balanced flavour. The white passito differs in colour according to the vine variety, the intense aroma and the sweet, full-bodied taste. The red version, on the other hand, is ruby red in colour, combined with a floral and fruity aroma and a dry and balanced taste. The raisin red varies its colour according to the vine of reference, it has an intense smell and a sweet, full-bodied flavour. Finally, the rosé has a pink colour, a floral bouquet and a dry, balanced flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.00% vol. for white, 10.50% vol. for red and rosé, 15.00% vol. for passito. 


Grape production area

The production area includes the entire island of Ischia, of volcanic origin, whose only relief is Mount Epomeo, 788 meters high and located in the center of the island.


Specificity and historical notes

The entire island is made up of the peak of Mount Epomeo, the last point of the volcano sunk in the last 130,000 years. In 1953 the archaeologist Giorgio Buchner found, on Monte Vico in Lacco Ameno, the Nestore Cup, dating back to 725 BC. On the cup, the oldest find of Greek poetry, is engraved a phrase that praises the local wine produced by the Eubei, the population who lived on the island.
