Costa Toscana

The Protected Geographical Indication "Costa Toscana" includes the following varieties of wines: White (also produced in the sparkling, mouthful and sweet), Red (also sweet and sweet), Rosé (also sparkling), Novello, Passito and late harvest. It is also possible to accompany the geographical indication with the name of one or more vines.


Grapes

The "Costa Toscana" PGI wines, even with varietal specifications, must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards composed of vines suitable for cultivation in Toscana region


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red (12.00% vol.) has an intense red colour with purplish reflections, a fine, pleasant aroma and a structured flavour. The novello type (11.00% vol.) has a vinous, fruity aroma and a dry, savoury taste. The "vendemmia tardiva" red (15.00% vol.) has a deep ruby colour, with fruity hints and a soft, sweet flavour. The passito is distinguished by its intense aroma and the taste of fresh, velvety fruit. The white (11.50% vol.) is straw yellow in colour, with a fine aroma and delicate flavour. The "vendemmia tardiva" white (15.00% vol.) tends to be golden in colour with a soft and sweet taste. The passito (16.00% vol.) tends to amber with aging and has hints of citrus. The rosé (11.00% vol.), even sparkling, is pink in colour, with a fine, floral aroma and a delicate flavour.


Grape production area

The production area includes the hills between 200 and 400 meters between the coastal strip and the Apennine ridge in the provinces of Massa Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto.


Specificity and historical notes

Cosimo Villafranchi, in his publication "L'enologia toscana" of 1773, mentioned the noble qualities of the wine of the Tuscan coast, from which the PGI "Costa Toscana" originates.
