Cisterna d’Asti

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Cisterna d'Asti" includes the homonymous red wine and its variant superiore. It is also possible to mention the vineyard.


Grapes

Cisterna d'Asti wines are produced from grapes coming from vineyards composed, for at least 80%, of Croatina vines. The remaining part, not exceeding 20%, can be made from grapes of other non-aromatic black grapes, provided they are suitable for cultivation in Piemonte.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Cisterna d'Asti is presented in an intense ruby red shade. It has an equally intense and characteristic scent, with elements of fruitiness. The taste is vinous, delicate, harmonious and sometimes lively. Finally, the minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol. In the Riserva version, the color turns to garnet, precisely because of aging. The aroma, on the other hand, becomes more delicate and the taste dry and harmonious. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume rises to 12% vol.


Grape production area

The entire production area is in the province of Cuneo. The cultivation area is characterized by a hilly pattern, with vineyards planted at altitudes never higher than 400 meters above sea level.


Specificity and historical notes

The Croatina vine is linked by ancient roots to the territory of Cisterna d'Asti. The first historical evidence dates back to the early 1800s and is attributed to the historian Goffredo Casalis.
