Calabria

The Protected Geographical Indication "Calabria" includes three types: white, also in the sparkling type, passito and Spumante; red, also in the sparkling type, passito and novello; Rosato, also in the sparkling type and Spumante.


Grapes

Wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Calabria" must be obtained from grapes from vineyards consisting of one or more vines suitable for cultivation in the Calabria Region. The Protected Geographical Indication "Calabria" with the specification of one of the vines suitable for cultivation in the Calabria Region is reserved for wines made from grapes from vineyards consisting of at least 85% of the corresponding vine. Grapes from similarly coloured grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Calabria Region, may contribute to the production of such wines, up to a maximum of 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Calabria" have a straw yellow colour, a pleasant smell and a fresh taste; the white passito has an intense perfume and a sweet taste; the minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.50% vol. for the white and 14% vol. for the passito. The red version has a deep colour, a vinous aroma and a harmonious flavour; the new wine is distinguished by its intense colour and fruity aroma, while the raisin red has a harmonious aroma and a sweet flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.00% for the red and the new, 14.00% for the passito; 10.50% vol., however, for the rosé, which is pink in colour, with a fine aroma and a harmonious taste. Spumante wines have a delicate to fragrant aroma and an extra brut to dry taste; the minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11,00% vol. 


Grape production area

The production area covers the entire administrative territory of the provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, Crotone, Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia in the Calabria region.


Specificity and historical notes

The wine is obtained mainly from vineyards located on average in hilly areas or on small terraces, both for the protection of quality and for the respect of the environmental landscape. Viticulture plays a fundamental role in the local economy.
