Bettona

The Protected Geographical Indication "Bettona"; includes three types of wine: white (also in the sparkling type), red (with variant novello) and rosé (also novello).


Grapes

Bettona PGI wines must be made from grapes from one or more varieties suitable for cultivation in the Umbria Region. In addition, the chosen grape variety must account for at least 85% of the total. Grapes from similarly coloured berry varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Umbria Region, may be used for production; up to a maximum of 15% of the grapes may also be produced with the specification of two varieties.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white Bettona wines, even in the sparkling type, have a straw yellow colour with greenish reflections, a vinous, delicate and fruity perfume and a savoury, lively and fresh taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 10,00%. The red and novello variants have a ruby red colour, tending towards garnet with ageing. The smell is vinous, delicate, more spicy when aged. The taste is full, soft, bitter and tannic with herbaceous hints. The alcoholic strength is 10,00% vol for the red wine, 11,00% vol. for the new wine. Finally, the rosé has an intense cherry pink color, a vinous, lively scent, with floral and fruity scents, which is combined with a fragrant, savory and bitter taste. The alcoholic strength shall be 10,00% vol.


Grape production area

The production area includes the entire administrative territory of the municipality of Bettona, in the province of Perugia.


Specificity and historical notes

Various historical documents indicate that viticulture in the Bettonese area has been consolidated for decades in various agricultural companies, some of which were already operating in the early 1900s.
