Basilicata

The Protected Geographical Indication "Basilicata" includes the following types of wine: white (also in the sparkling and passito type), red (with sparkling, novello and passito variants) and rosé (also in the sparkling version). 

Grapes

Wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Basilicata"; white, red and rosé must be obtained from grapes from one or more vines suitable or under observation for the region Basilicata. When the vine is indicated, it must represent at least 85% of the total number of grapes (Aglianico and Montepulciano are excluded). Grapes of other similarly coloured berry varieties may be used to produce such wines, up to a maximum of 15%. 

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Basilicata"; Bianco PGI wines are straw yellow in colour, with a fruity aroma and a dry, savoury flavour. The raisin white differs for the yellow colour tending to the amber. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 10,50% for white wine and 13% for raisin wine. The Red version has a ruby red colour, a fruity perfume and a harmonious flavour. The raisin red, on the other hand, differs for the colour tending to garnet. The minimum alcoholic strength shall be 11% vol for red and 14,50% vol. for passito. The rosé (11% vol) has a pinkish cherry colour, with a persistent perfume and a dry flavour. The novello; and "frizzante"; types must have a minimum alcoholic strength of 11% vol and 10,50% vol. respectively. 

Grape production area

The production area covers the entire administrative territory of the provinces of Matera and Potenza in the Basilicata region. 

Specificity and historical notes

The territory of Basilicata has focused much of its winemaking economy on the production of sparkling wines, a form of specialization of the area that has made its wine business famous throughout the world.
