Barbaresco

The "Barbaresco" Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is granted to the Barbaresco and Barbaresco Riserva wines, as well as to their variants with additional geographical indications.


Grapes

The wines with the Barbaresco denomination are produced in purity, using exclusively grapes from Nebbiolo vines.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The wines Barbaresco and Barbaresco Riserva have a garnet red colour, embellished with orange reflections. The aroma is intense and characteristic and is accompanied by a dry, full, harmonious and rightly tannic taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.50% vol.


Grape production area

The Barbaresco wine is the son of the langhe. The production area is rather concentrated and coincides with the territory of three Piedmontese municipalities: Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. To these is added a small portion of the town of Alba, corresponding to San Rocco Senodelvio. The vineyards in these areas are located on soils with a particular geological composition, characterised by the presence of the so-called "Tortorian soil", which is very favourable for the cultivation of vines.


Specificity and historical notes

The Nebbiolo from which the barbaresco wine originates has always been cultivated in that area according to traditional techniques. Its history has ancient roots and, according to many, the name Barbaresco itself refers to the barbarian peoples, who caused the fall of the Roman Empire and settled in this region.
