Arghillà

The Protected Geographical Indication "Arghillà" includes two types of wine: red and rosé, both of which are also in the novello type.


Grapes

The red and rosé wines with the Protected Geographical Indication "Arghillà" must be obtained from grapes coming from one or more similarly coloured grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the Calabria region.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Arghillà" are characterized by a ruby red color, accompanied by a vinous scent and an intense flavor. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.00% vol. The new red version is distinguished by its deep red colour, fruity aroma and harmonious flavour, with a minimum alcohol content of 11.00% vol. The rosé, on the other hand, has a more or less intense pink colour, combined with a fine, characteristic aroma and a fresh, harmonious taste. The minimum alcoholic strength is 12,00% vol. Finally, the rosato novello has a fruity aroma and a minimum alcohol content of 11.00% vol.


Grape production area

The production area includes a large area overlooking the Strait of Messina, bordered by the latter and the slope that climbs to the Aspromonte. The area is mainly hilly with a typical coastal microclimate.


Specificity and historical notes

The millenary history of winemaking in the region, from Magna Graecia to the present day, is the fundamental proof of the close connection and interaction between human factors and the peculiar characteristics of "Arghillà" wine. The intervention of man in the particular territory has, over the centuries, handed down the traditional enological techniques and cultivation of the vine, improved and refined in modern times to obtain the current renowned wine.
