Vernaccia di Oristano

Vernaccia di Oristano, identified by the homonymous Protected Designation of Origin, is a white wine produced both in the basic version and in the Superiore, Riserva and Liquoroso variants.


Grapes

All the wines of the denomination are produced exclusively with a percentage equals to 100% of grapes coming from the “Vernaccia di Oristano” vine.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Vernaccia di Oristano (actual alcoholic content by volume 15% vol.) and its variants Superiore (15. 5% vol.) and Riserva (15. 5% vol.) are wines with a fine color that varies between golden and amber; moreover, the smell is delicate and alcoholic, refined by nuances of almond blossom, together with an aftertaste of almonds, which is fine, subtle and warm. The Liquoroso variant differs slightly from these organoleptic characteristics in that it has a slightly higher alcoholic content, equal to 16. 5% vol., a more intense and complex aroma and a flavour that ranges from dry to sweet.


Grape production area

The area of production of Vernaccia di Oristano coincides with a portion of the homonymous Sardinian province, on the sides of the river Tirso, which enters the Gulf of Oristano. The orography of the area is sub-flat, the climate is Mediterranean.


Specificity and historical notes

The Vernaccia di Oristano was the first Sardinian wine to be recognised as DCO. It comes from a vine with an ancient history, which the Romans already found on the island when they began their domination, renaming it "vernaculum", that is local vine, precisely because they did not know it.
