Sardegna Semidano

"Sardegna Semidano" is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) that identifies a particular type of white wine, also produced in the Spumante, Superiore and Passito variants and in the variant with the "Mogoro" sub-area indication.

Grapes

All the wines of the denomination must be produced using grapes coming from vineyards composed, for at least 85%, of the Semidano vine. The remaining portion, which may not exceed 15%, may consist of other white grapes, suitable for cultivation in Sardegna.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

"Sardegna Semidano Bianco" (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 11% vol.) has a straw yellow appearance, veined by reflections that tend to golden, and releases a characteristic scent and delicate fruity scents; the flavor is soft, savory and fresh. The same organoleptic characteristics also apply to the Superiore variant and to the variant with the "Mogoro" sub-area indication, which are distinguished only by a slightly higher alcohol content, equal to 13% vol. in the first case and 11.5% vol. in the second. In the Spumante (11.5% vol.), on the other hand, the straw-yellow colour is enhanced by greenish reflections and by a fine and persistent foam; the aroma is characteristic and delicate; the flavour is fresh, savoury and slightly aromatic and can range from dry to medium-sweet to sweet. Finally, the Passito (15% vol.) is golden yellow, with an intense and ethereal aroma, reminiscent of ripe fruit, and sweet, full and honeyed taste.

Grape production area

The production area, which coincides with the entire Sardinian territory, is rather complex and varied, both from the morphological point of view and from the geographical and climatic point of view.

Specificity and historical notes

"Semidano" is a particular vine, the origins of which have not yet been well reconstructed. The first research in this direction dates back to 1780, but its current name appears only in 1879, in the "Vocabolarietto botanico sardo-italiano" of the Cara.
