Sillaro

The Protected Geographical Indication 'Sillaro' or 'Bianco del Sillaro' identifies white wines, also in the sparkling and Novello types.


Grapes

At least 70% of the wines with the typical geographical indication "Sillaro" or "Bianco del Sillaro" must be produced from Albana vines. Other berry varieties of the same colour suitable for cultivation in Emilia-Romagna may contribute to the production, up to a maximum of 30%. Artificial gasification is prohibited for the sparkling variety.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white "Sillaro" or "Bianco del Sillaro" is straw yellow in colour, accompanied by a smell of good intensity, tending to be fruity and with a dry to sweet, savoury flavour. The sparkling type is characterized by its straw yellow colour, it exudes an intense perfume with floral and/or fruity scents and on the palate it has a dry to sweet, savoury taste. The Novello version is straw yellow in colour, combined with an intense fruity aroma and a good soft and savoury flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10% vol. for white and sparkling wine, 11% vol. for Novello wine.


Grape production area

The production area includes the area of the river Sillaro, which marks the western boundary of Romagna.


Specificity and historical notes

The cultivation of the Albana vine, the protagonist of the Sillaro area, has ancient roots. Albana allowed to produce a dry white wine with the grapes that ripened before, while from the late harvest wines with good residual sugar were obtained. Thanks to its versatility, Albana is still used as a reinforcement of other varieties, such as Trebbiano, which do not reach good levels of alcohol and structure.
