Cannara

The Protected Geographical Indication Cannara, includes two types of wines: red and red passito


Grapes

"Cannara" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of one or more vines suitable for cultivation in the Umbria Region. The typical geographical indication "Cannara"; with the specification of one of the suitable and/or observed grape varieties for the Umbria region is reserved for wines obtained from grapes coming from vineyards composed of at least 85% of the corresponding grape variety. The grapes used to produce the wine may be similarly coloured grapes of the same colour, suitable for cultivation in the Umbria Region and present in the vineyards to a maximum of 15%. Cannara"; IGT wines with the specification of one or two grape varieties can also be produced in the passito type.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red "Cannara" PGI wines have a lively ruby red colour, more or less intense, tending towards garnet with ageing, with a vinous, delicate, spicy aroma when aged, which is accompanied by a full, soft, bitterish, fruity, delicately herbaceous taste, pleasantly tannic and with hints of toasted wood when aged. The raisin red version, on the other hand, has a more or less intense red colour tending towards garnet, with a vinous, delicate, spicy perfume when aged, and a sweet, full, soft, fruity flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 10,00% vol. for red and 15,00% vol for red passito.


Grape production area

The production area covers the entire administrative territory of the municipalities of: Cannara, Bettona, Bevagna, in the province of Perugia.


Specificity and historical notes

The presence of viticulture in the PGI area under consideration dates back to Roman times: from an archival point of view, the vocation for viticulture is documented by the municipal statutes of the cities of the denomination, which contain numerous chapters on the areas to be allocated to vineyards, the methods for determining the time of the harvest and the discipline of trade in wine.
