Murgia

The "Murgia" Protected Geographical Indication identifies white wines (also in the Sparkling, Spumante, Uve stramature and Passito types), red wines (also in the Sparkling, Uve stramature, Passito and Novello types) and rosé wines (also in the Sparkling, Spumante and Novello types).


Grapes

Murgia" PGI wines must be produced from vines suitable for cultivation in the province of Bari. In case of specification of the vine is required a minimum share of 85% of grapes from the same, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from another vine, always suitable for the province of Bari. With the specification of vine can also be produced the types Sparkling and Spumante for the white berry, Passito and Novello for the red berry.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white Murgia has a more or less intense straw yellow colour, is fruity on the nose and has a typical, dry, savoury flavour. The red has an intense colour with purplish nuances, combined with a fruity and complex aroma and a harmonious and typical flavour. The rosé version is characterized by a pinkish cherry colour and an intense and persistent bouquet, while it is dry and characteristic on the palate. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10,50% vol. for white and 11% vol. for red and rosé. The single-variety productions, as well as those resulting from particular vinifications, have further organoleptic characteristics, punctually described in the specification.


Grape production area

The production area includes the hills and plateaus of the north-western Murge.


Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the area is severely fragmented as a result of the land reform. It is based, in fact, on the division of property, to allow access to income to a higher number of families.
