Casavecchia di Pontelatone

The Protected Designation of Origin "Casavecchia di Pontelatone" includes two types of wine: red and red reserve.

Grapes

The grapes of the "Casavecchia" vine must represent at least 85% of those used for the production of both types. Other non-aromatic red grapes, suitable for cultivation in Campania, can contribute to the remaining part.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Both Rosso and Rosso Riserva have the same organoleptic characteristics, differing only in terms of the minimum total alcohol content by volume, which in the first case is 12.5% vol. and in the second of 13% vol. At first glance, the "Casavecchia di Pontelatone" is ruby red, with variable intensity and tendency to turn to garnet with aging. The smell that emanates is intense, persistent and characteristic. It is accompanied by a dry and savory taste, full-bodied and rightly tannic.

Grape production area

The "Casavecchia di Pontelatone" was born in the province of Caserta, in a small portion of the territory, characterized by the presence of Monte Maggiore and Monti Tifatini.

Specificity and historical notes

The history of the "Casavecchia" vine revolves around an episode that occurred at the end of 1800. This "Scirocco Prisco", near a ruin of his property, found a vine plant belonging to a type of vine then unknown in the area. From there I began to reproduce it by extension and in a short time spread it also in neighboring municipalities, where it was renamed "Casavecchia", from the phrase with which everyone called it: "the grape and chella old house".
