Valle d'Aosta o Valée d'Aoste

The "Valle d'Aosta" Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) includes a wide range of wines, some with only an indication of colour, such as whites, reds and rosés. These are accompanied by wines with an indication of the vine variety or with a mention of the geographical area, the complete list of which can be found in the specification.


Grapes

At least 85% of the "monovitigni" wines are made up of grapes of similar varieties. As for the other types, however, Donnas has at least 85% Nebbiolo, Arnad Montjovet at least 70% Nebbiolo, Chambave is composed of at least 70% Petit Rouge, Nus has at least 70% Vien de Nus and Petit Rouge (of which at least 40% Vien de Nus), Nus Malvoisie is composed of Pinot Grigio, Torrette has at least 70% Petit Rouge, Enfer d'Arvier is composed of at least 85% Petit Rouge, while Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle wines are composed of Prié blanc. For the remaining percentage of the above mentioned wines may be used grapes of berry varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Valle d'Aosta.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The whites have a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume ranging from 9% to 11.5% vol.; the reds instead between 11% and 11.5% vol. For the whites the color is verodolino yellow, sometimes coppered or straw yellow, more or less intense and with golden hues; the odors range from intense to pleasant, elegant and fruity, with hints of mountain herbs; the flavor is fruity, fine, balanced, sometimes harmonious, savory and parched. For the red wines, on the other hand, the colour is ruby red, tending towards garnet, with possible violet reflections; the aroma is fruity, sometimes intense and persistent; the flavour is tannic, soft and austere.


Grape production area

The production area of "Valle d'Aosta" is located in the basin of the river Dora Baltea, characterised by terraced plains of recent alluvial origin and alluvial cones.


Specificity and historical notes

The terraces, where the best of the wine-growing tradition of the area is expressed, are human works that prove how much the link between the "Valle d'Aosta" wines and the territory is deep and rooted in time.
