Val di Magra

The"Val di Magra" PGI includes four types of wine: white, red, pink and with the indication of one or two of the vines. The vines concerned by the specification may be: Vermentino, Albarola, Durella, Trebbiano (from Trebbiano toscano), Verdello, Pollera, Ciliegiolo, Groppello, Merlot.


Grapes

The main types of grape for the production of PGI wines "Val di Magra" hang from the type. Vermentino, Albarola, Durella, Trebbiano Toscano and Verdello are used for white wines. Pollera, Ciliegiolo, Groppello and Merlot for the red. Only Ciliegiolo and Pollera, on the other hand, are used for the rosé. Other grape varieties of similar colour, suitable for cultivation in Toscana, can also contribute to the production. The specification of the vine is reserved for wines at least 85% produced with the corresponding grapes, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from another vine, berry of similar color, suitable for cultivation in Toscana. Reference to the name of two grape varieties is permitted only if the wine is obtained exclusively from the grapes concerned.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The minimum total alcholic strength by volume starts from 10.50%. For the white types the colour varies from a more or less intense straw yellow with a dry, fruity and characteristic flavour of the vineyard of origin. For the red the color is ruby, with a fruity color and spicy notes and the flavor comes from the grape of origin. Finally, the rosé has a bright pink colour of good intensity with a scent of vegetal and floral notes.


Grape production area

The production area includes the territory of Lunigiana.


Specificity and historical notes

The richness of the winemaking tradition in the Lunigiana is made up of the wide variety of typical vines, such as the "Albarola", the "Durella" and the "Pollera", not widespread in the rest of Toscana, where the Trebbiano and Sangiovese are predominat.
