Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio

The Protected Geographical Indication "Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio" includes white, red (also Novello), rosé (also sparkling) and raisin wines from Vendemmia Tardiva.

Grapes

The wines with the Protected Geographical Indication "Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio" must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Lombardy. In case of specification of the vine, the composition must be at least 85% of the corresponding vine and up to 15% of other berry vine of similar color suitable for Lombardy. For the Chiavennasca, Rossola and Pignola varieties, only for the quiet dry white type, the specification is authorised even in differences in colour between the variety and the wine. The indication of the Nebbiolo grape variety, of which the Chiavennasca phenotype is part, cannot be used in the preparation of a white wine.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10.50% vol.) has a straw yellow colour, sometimes with greenish reflections, with a fresh, delicate, floral perfume and a dry, savoury, pleasant taste. The white passito (16% vol.) has an intense yellow colour with pierced reflections, a broad, composite, intense aroma and a sweet, full, harmonious and elegant flavour. The red (10.50% vol.) is ruby red in colour with a fresh, fruity perfume and a savoury, slightly tannic taste. The novello (11% vol.) has a vinous, slightly fruity aroma and a fresh, round, velvety flavour. The rosé (10.50% vol.), finally, is pale pink to intense in colour, with a fine, delicate aroma and a dry, fresh, fruity taste. In the production of Late harvest, the characteristics indicated are mixed with those peculiar to this type of vinification, as identified in the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area includes the territory of Valtellina, in the Sondrio's provincia.

Specificity and historical notes

The Lega Grigia, for almost three centuries from 1550 to 1797, ruled over the Valtellina and gave great impetus to the wine business trading with the courts of central and northern Europe.
