Spello

The Protected Geographical Indication "Spello" includes 3 types of wine: white, red and rosé.


Grapes

The "Spello" PGI is reserved for wines produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Umbria. The specification of the vine is provided for in case of minimum use of 85% of the corresponding vine, while the remaining 15% can be produced from another vine suitable for cultivation in Umbria. In case of specification of two varieties, these must represent 100% of the grapes, and each must have a share of not less than 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10% vol.) is straw yellow in colour with greenish reflections, it exudes a vinous, delicate, fruity perfume with a savoury taste, sometimes lively, fresh and harmonious. The red type (minimum total alcohol content by volume 10% vol.) is ruby red in color, lively, tending to garnet with aging, combined with a vinous, delicate, pleasant, spicy with aging and full taste, soft, harmonious, pleasantly bitter, fruity, characteristic, delicately herbaceous, with the addition of hints of tannins and toasted wood when aged. The rosé (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10% vol.) is characterized by a bright cherry pink colour, combined with a vinous, fresh, lively perfume, with floral and delicate fruity hints, while the taste is harmonious, fresh, fragrant, savory and with a bitterish aftertaste.


Grape production area

The production area is located on the slopes of Monte Subasio. The vineyards are located at an altitude varying between 180 and 750 metres above sea level.


Specificity and historical notes

The municipal statutes of the city of Spello contain a lot of information on the regulation of wine growing since Roman times.
