San Martino della Battaglia

"San Martino della Battaglia" is a protected designation of origin that identifies a specific type of white wine and its fortified variant.


Grapes

For the vinification of "San Martino della Battaglia" wines, at least 80% of the grapes coming from vineyards made up of Tocai Friulano grapes must be used. For the remaining part (maximum 20%) other non-aromatic white grapes, suitable for cultivation in the province of Verona and in the Lombardy region, may be used.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine has a citrine yellow aspect that tends to golden with aging, the scent is characteristic, intense and evolved, the palate is fresh, dry and round, with a slight aftertaste of almond. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol. The fortified wine (15% vol.), on the other hand, is yellow and tends equally to golden with aging, the scent is confirmed characteristic and intense, the flavor is generous and harmonious, velvety, pleasantly sweet and embellished with a slight aftertaste of almond and possibly, in case of aging in cask, a hint of wood.


Grape production area

The production area extends between the provinces of Verona and Brescia, in a hilly area on the border between the morainic hills and the hinterland south of Lake Garda.


Specificity and historical notes

The territory where "San Martino della Battaglia" wines are produced has a long wine-growing tradition. For centuries the activity of the area has been linked to the production of Lugana. However, the little predisposition of the land for this type of wine has meant that the vinification never reached levels of excellence. In recent years, therefore, it was decided to focus on another vine, the Tocai friulano, with valuable results.
