Ravenna

The "Ravenna" PGI identifies white wines (also in the Lively, Sparkling and Spumante types), red wines (also in the Lively, Sparkling and Novello types) and rosé wines (also in the Vivace, Frizzante and Spumante types). It can also be produced with different indications of grape variety.

Grapes

The 'Ravenna' PGIs must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in Emilia Romagna. The specification of the vine is provided for in the case of a minimum quota of use of 85% of the corresponding grapes. The remaining 15% may be produced from similarly coloured grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Emilia Romagna.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white (10% vol.) has a more or less intense straw yellow colour, combined with a good intense aroma, with floral and/or fruity hints, depending on the composition; the taste goes from dry to sweet and is savoury on the palate. The red (10% vol.) is ruby red in colour, with a vinous bouquet, embellished with fruity notes that sometimes go hand in hand with floral notes, often violet, and spicy notes, depending on the varietal composition and the area of cultivation; the flavour ranges from dry to sweet, with good softness and the right acidity. The rosè (10% vol.) has a rosy colour of different tones, a scent with prevailing fruity notes and a dry to sweet taste, of the right softness and freshness, savoury. For further information on the specific characteristics of the types and varieties, please refer to the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area includes the province of Ravenna, two-thirds of which is flat and one-third hilly and mountainous, starting from the Via Emilia and heading south-west.

Specificity and historical notes

Already from the first century BC, Strabo attests the cultivation of the vine in the swampy areas around Ravenna.
