Penisola Sorrentina

The wines of Protected Designation of Origin "Penisola Sorrentina" are “Bianco”, “Rosso” and “Rosso frizzante”. The product specification also provides for the possibility of production with indication of a sub-area: “Sorrento” (“Bianco” and “Rosso”), “Lettere” (“frizzante”) and “Gragnano” (“frizzante”)


Grapes

The “Penisola Sorrentina Bianco” and the “Sorrento Bianco “are produced with grapes from vineyards, composed for at least 60% by “Falanghina” and / or “Biancolella” and / or “Greco Bianco” vines (a 40% quota is reserved for “Falanghina”). All types of “Rosso” wines, on the other hand, require at least 60% of “Piedirosso” and / or “Sciascinoso” and / or “Aglianico” (for “Piedirosso” only, is reserved a quota of not less than 40%). Finally, both for “Bianco” and for”Rosso”, it is possible to foresee the use, to the cover of the missing quotas, of other grape varieties of similar color, suitable for cultivation in the province of “Napoli”.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

“Bianco” (minimum total alcholic strength by volume 10% vol) and “Sorrento Bianco” (11% vol) have a straw-yellow appearance, more or less intense; the smell is delicate, winy and pleasant, combined with a dry, harmonious and right body taste. The “Rosso” (10.5% vol) is ruby ​​red, with varying degrees of intensity, has a vinous smell and a dry taste, rightly tannic and medium-bodied. In the “Frizzante” variant (also with the indication of the “Lettere” or “Gragnano” sub-zones) it is enriched with a lively and evanescent froth; the smell acquires fruity notes while the taste becomes dry (or soft), sometimes with a lovable vein. The “Sorrento Rosso” (11.5% vol), finally, maintains the same ruby ​​hue, but with a tendency to garnet; the smell is vinous and intense; the taste is dry and sapid, rightly tannic and with good body.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with the “Sorrento” Peninsula, which involves a handful of municipalities in the province of “Napoli” and is generated by the “Lattari” mountains.


Specificity and historical notes

The Greeks probably started the wine production on the “Lattari” mountains and already in Roman times the wines of these areas were very successful.
