Osco o Terre degli Osci

The Protected Geographical Indication "Osco" or "Terre degli Osci" includes white wines (also in the sparkling and passito types), red wines (also in the sparkling and novello types), rosé wines (also in the sparkling type).


Grapes

The PGI 'Osco' or 'Terre degli Osci' is reserved for wines produced from vines suitable for cultivation in Molise. In case of specification of the vine, the wine must be produced using at least 85% of the corresponding vine, while the remaining 15% must come from a vine suitable for cultivation in Molise.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 10% vol), even sparkling, is straw yellow in colour, with a fruity, fresh aroma and a dry, harmonious flavour. The raisin version (13% vol) differs for the color tending to amber with aging. The red (10,50% vol), also sparkling (10% vol) and new (11% vol), has a ruby color with purplish reflections, exudes a characteristic scent with a dry taste, not tannic, soft. The rosé (10% vol), even sparkling, has a more or less intense pink color, combined with a fruity, floral and dry taste, typical, fresh. In case of specification of the vine, the minimum alcoholic strength is 10% vol. for white, white sparkling, red sparkling, while it is 10,50% vol. for red, pink, pink sparkling, and is finally 11% vol for novello wine.


Grape production area

The production area is characterized by mountainous and hilly terrain, with narrow and elongated peaks, interspersed with deep valleys.


Specificity and historical notes

The Paetrutianum, a wine dating back to the time of ancient Greece, is considered the parent of the Molise wine tradition. Even Pliny, in his writings, praises the qualities of wines in the area of Isernia.
