Ortona

"Ortona" is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) that identifies both a white wine and a red wine.


Grapes

Ortona Rosso wine is produced from grapes coming from vineyards at least 95% of which are Montepulciano vines, with which other non-aromatic red grapes, suitable for cultivation in Abruzzo, can possibly compete. Ortona bianco, on the other hand, is made from Trebbiano abruzzese and/or Trebbiano toscano vines, present with a minimum quota of 70%. For the remaining part, up to a maximum of 30%, other non-aromatic white grapes may be used, provided they can be grown in Abruzzo.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red Ortona has a pleasant ruby colour, which varies in intensity according to the production and sometimes is enriched with slight purplish nuances. A light spice enriches its vinous and characteristic smell, accompanied by a full-bodied and dry taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.5% vol. In the White Ortona, on the other hand, the appearance is straw yellow, possibly veined with slight greenish reflections; the aroma is pleasant and delicately fruity, while the taste is dry, harmonious, velvety and savoury. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12% vol.


Grape production area

The production area is limited to the territory of the municipality of Ortona, in the province of Chieti, characterized by a hilly trend.


Specificity and historical notes

Ortona today is one of the major centers of wine production in Abruzzo. A predominance that has ancient origins, dating back to 1200, when a trade agreement was signed for the creation of a privileged route between Venice, Ancona, Ortona and Slavonia.
