Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane

The Protected Designation of Origin "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane" identifies two types of red wine: the basic version and the Riserva variant.


Grapes

The production takes place mainly using grapes from Montepulciano vine, with a minimum quota of 90%. These can be accompanied by Sangiovese grapes, up to a maximum of 10%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane", also in its Riserva version, is a red wine with an intense ruby color, sometimes embellished with purplish nuances. With ageing, however, it tends towards garnet red. The aroma is characteristic, intense and ethereal, with hints of red fruits. The flavor, however, is dry, harmonious and velvety, rightly tannic, and can be enriched by hints of wood, after aging in barrels. It has a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 12,50% vol.


Grape production area

The production area of "Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane" coincides with a hilly area between the Adriatic Sea, on the one hand, and the "massiccio Gran Sasso" and the Monti della Laga, on the other.


Specificity and historical notes

The relationship between the territory of Teramo and the wine is very strong and dating back. It is even mentioned in the deeds of Hannibal (216 BC), as the Greek historian Polibius recalls. In fact, from there came the wine that had "healed the wounded and put the men back on their feet". On the other hand, the geographical area lends itself to viticulture and offers the vines fundamental characteristics, such as good exposure and the absence of water stagnation.
