Mitterberg

The Protected Geographical Indication "Mitterberg" includes these varieties: White, Red, Rosé, Sparkling and Passito that can be obtained from one or more vines of similar color. Production is envisaged with the indication of the vine variety on the label.

Grapes

"Mitterberg" PGI wines must be made from grapes from vines suitable for cultivation in the province of Bolzano. The specification of the vine on the label is reserved only for those produced for at least 85% with the corresponding blend, while for the remaining 15% can be used all varieties suitable for cultivation in the province of Bolzano.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white "Mitterberg" is straw yellow in colour, with a fruity aroma and a full, harmonious flavour. The red version is a shade that ranges from light ruby to the most intense, up to deep garnet. It releases a delicate perfume and gives the palate a soft, full and harmonious flavour. The Frizzante, Novello and Passito types enrich the basic organoleptic characteristics with the peculiarities that come from the grape of origin. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.00% vol. for White, Red and Sparkling, 11.00% vol. for Novello and 14.00% vol. for Passito.

Grape production area

The production area is protected, to the north, by the Alpine chain and opens, to the south, towards the Mediterranean. This position favours the production of vines on the numerous hilly areas in the province of Bolzano.

Specificity and historical notes

Most of the province of Bolzano is dedicated to the production of high quality grapes, as demonstrated by the more than 5000 producers registered in the register. Over the last few years, PGI wines have been particularly developed and are now of considerable commercial importance.
