Lipuda

The Protected Geographical Indication "Lipuda", identifies white wines (also sparkling), red wines (also sparkling and novello) and rosé wines (also sparkling).

Grapes

The "Lipuda" PGI is reserved for wines produced with grapes from vineyards consisting exclusively of vines suitable for cultivation in the Calabria Region.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The White "Lipuda" PGI wines have a straw yellow colour, accompanied by an intense, characteristic aroma and a fresh, savoury taste. Red, on the other hand, is an intense red colour, with a complex and characteristic aroma and a harmonious and typical flavour. The novello version is distinguished by its more or less intense red colour and its complex and fruity bouquet. Finally, the rosé is characterized by a more or less intense pink colour, a characteristic, delicate aroma and a harmonious and pleasant flavour. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10,50% vol. for white wine and 11% vol. for all other types.

Grape production area

The production area includes the hills that accompany the Lipuda river from the Sila Grande to the Ionian Sea. The area, also in the province of Crotone, is very close to that of production of the famous Cirò

Specificity and historical notes

In the era of ancient Greece, the cultivation of the vine was one of the main activities transmitted to the Calabrian population. Sibari and Crotone, in particular, stood out for the excellent quality of the wines produced.
