Isola dei Nuraghi

The Protected Geographical Indication "Isola dei Nuraghi" identifies white wines (with sparkling, spumante, spumante di qualità, from overripe and passito grapes), red wines (also sparkling, spumante, spumante di qualità, novello, overripe and passito grapes) and rosé wines (also sparkling, spumante e spumante di qualità).


Grapes

For the production of "Isola dei Nuraghi" PGI wines, vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna must be used. In case of the specification of vine (with the exception of the vines Cannonau, Girò, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano) it is necessary that the rate of grapes used must be, at least, equals to the 85%, while for the remaining 15% all the vines suitable for cultivation in Sardegna can compete.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 10% vol.), even sparkling, is paper-white to amber-yellow in colour, with a characteristic aroma and a dry to sweet flavour. The white passito (16% vol.) and overripe grapes (15% vol.) are distinguished by the color from yellow to amber. The red (11% vol.) and sparkling red versions are ruby to garnet in colour, with a characteristic aroma and a dry to sweet taste. The novello wine has violet reflections and a dry to sweet flavour. The passito red (16% vol.) and overripe grapes (15% vol.) vary in color tending to orange. The rosé (10.50% vol.), even sparkling, is pink in colour, with a characteristic aroma and a dry to sweet flavour. The sparkling wines are characterized by a fine and persistent froth, maintaining, for the rest, the characteristics of the main types.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with the entire region of Sardegna.


Specificity and historical notes

The archaeological finds of Sardinian sites, including some charred grape seeds, show the presence of a wine culture as early as 1300 B.C., thus before the Phoenicians, considered the "fathers" of the spread of the vine in Sardegna.
