Gutturnio

The Gutturnio is a red wine, protected by Protected Designation of Origin, produced in five types: sparkling, Superiore, Classico Superiore, Riserva, Classic Riserva.


Grapes

"Gutturnio" wines are obtained from grapes coming from vineyards composed of two grape varieties: Barbera, for a share between 55% and 70%, and Croatina, for a share three 30% and 45%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The sparkling "Gutturnio" is ruby red in colour, with different degrees of intensity. Its aroma is characteristic and vinous and on the palate it is fresh and young. It has a minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 12% vol. The Superiore and Classico Superiore variants, on the other hand, have an intense ruby red hue, combined with a characteristic aroma and a dry, still, fine, full-bodied flavour. In this case, the alcohol minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 12.5% vol. Finally, the Gutturnio Riserva and the Classico Riserva (13% vol.) are intense ruby red, on a garnet background. The aroma is pleasant, the taste dry, still, harmonious and full-bodied.


Grape production area

The production area is located in the province of Piacenza, in a hilly area characterized by a sub-continental climate.


Specificity and historical notes

Piacenza's wine history is linked to a symbolic historical find: the Gutturium, now kept in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. It is a finely crafted silver jug, used to make diners taste, at the end of dinner, a sip of wine called the "sip of friendship".
