Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit

"Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit" (DOCG) is a Protected Designation of Origin reserved for the white wine of the same name, which also includes a type with an indication of the sub-area "Cialla".


Grapes

"Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit" wine is produced with a prevalence (minimum 85%) of grapes from the Picolit vine. For the remaining quota (maximum 15%) other white grapes, suitable for cultivation in Friuli Venezia Giulia, may be used. For the Cialla sub-area, the wine must be produced in purity from grapes of the Picolit variety.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

On consumption, the wine (15-16% vol.) has a golden yellow color, with a variable intensity that makes it ranging from pure gold to amber, after a few years of aging. The aroma is intense, fine and pleasant, and the scent that emanates is elegant, reminiscent of the honeycomb and releases a wide bouquet and amalgamated, with aromatic nuances of wild flowers. The taste is semi sweet or sweet, warm and harmonious, with possible hints of wood, and gives prolonged and lasting sensations.


Grape production area

The production area falls within the territory of nineteen municipalities, all belonging to the Province of Udine and located near the border with the Republic of Slovenia. The land used for wine-growing is part of the so-called 'Flysch di Cormòns', an alternation of layers of marl and sandstone.


Specificity and historical notes

"Piccolit" is a very ancient vine, already cultivated in Roman times. There are different opinions on the origin of the name. According to Andrea Zucchini, canon of 1700, it is due to the small amount of grapes that this vine produces. The opinion of Gallesio, an eighteenth-century botanist, who refers to the small size of the grapes themselves, is different.
