Colli del Limbara

The Protected Geographical Indication "Colli del Limbara" includes three types of wine: white, also in the sparkling variant, red, also in the sparkling variant and novello, rosé, also in the sparkling variant.


Grapes

"Colli del Limbara" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of one or more vines suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia region. The PGI denomination "Colli del Limbara", with the specification of one of the vines suitable for cultivation in the Sardinia Region, is reserved for wines obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of at least 85% of the corresponding vines (Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Malvasia, Monica, Moscato, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Vermentino, and Vernaccia are excluded). Grapes from similarly colored berry varieties, not aromatic, suitable for cultivation in the Region of Sardinia, up to a maximum of 15% may be used for production.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The colour of "Colli della Limbara" PGI wines ranges from paper white to amber yellow, a characteristic aroma and a flavour ranging from dry to sweet. The red version has a ruby colour tending towards garnet with maturation, with a characteristic perfume and a taste from dry to sweet. The new red differs in taste from dry to sweet. Rosé, on the other hand, is characterised by a colour ranging from pink to cherry, a characteristic aroma and a flavour ranging from dry to sweet. The sparkling versions of white, red and pink are distinguished by the taste from dry to sweet, sparkling, and a fine foam, evanescent. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10,00% vol. for white wine, 10,5% vol. for rosé wine and sparkling wine and 11,00% vol. for red wine and red wine.


Grape production area

The production area is located at the north-eastern end of Sardinia and coincides largely with the granite region of Gallura, in the Province of Sassari.


Specificity and historical notes

The cultivation of vines and the processes of domestication and transformation of "Vitis vinifera silvestris" have been part of the life of the Gallura territories from the early Iron Age to the present day.
