Capalbio

The Protected Designation of Origin "Capalbio" includes the following wines: white, red, red Riserva, rosé, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Vin Santo.


Grapes

Red "Capalbio" (also in the Riserva version) and rosè wines must be produced with at least 50% Sangiovese grapes combined with grapes from other red grapes, provided they are suitable for cultivation in Toscana. For white and Vin Santo, on the other hand, the base is made up of Trebbiano toscano (minimum 50%) and other white grapes allowed in the region, with the exception of white Moscato. For wines with a specific indication, namely Vermentino, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the corresponding vine must provide at least 85% of the total grapes. The remaining part, up to a maximum of 15%, may instead come from other similarly colored berry varieties.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The red wines (vol. 11%) have a ruby red hue with violet reflections. The aroma is vinous and, in the types with the greatest presence of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is enriched with vegetal notes and ripe fruit, jam and spices. The taste is full and full-bodied, rightly tannic. Finally, in the Riserva version, the color tends to garnet with aging and the aromatic profile becomes wider, more complex and longer. White wines (10,50% vol.), on the other hand, have a straw yellow color, which in Vermentino (11% vol.) has greenish reflections. The bouquet is fresh, fruity and delicate; the taste is dry and medium bodied. Finally, Vin Santo (vol. 16%) goes from golden yellow to intense amber, with a rich and complex aroma, ethereal and intense, with notes of ripe fruit and raisins. It accompanies a velvety and round taste.


Grape production area

The production area falls in the hilly area of the province of Grosseto and includes the municipalities of Capalbio, Manciano, Magliano and Orbetello.


Specificity and historical notes

The Capalbio area has a very ancient wine-growing vocation, dating back to the Etruscan period and which experienced a strong impulse during the Roman domination.
