Alta Langa

The Protected Designation of Origin "Alta Langa" includes the following varieties of wine: spumante and rosé spumante. The riserva variant is available for both of them.


Grapes

At least 90% of the "Alta Langa" spumante wines are obtained from grapes from Pinot Nero and/or Chardonnay vines. For the remaining 10%, grapes from non-aromatic varieties may be used, provided they are suitable for cultivation in Piemonte.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Both types of "Alta Langa" spumante, even in their "riserva" version, have a fine and persistent froth. The aroma is fragrant and complex, the result of refermentation in the bottle. The taste is savoury, fine and harmonious. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume of 11,50% vol is also identical. The only difference between the two is the colour, which in the first case ranges from straw yellow to intense gold, while in the second case it is pinkish.


Grape production area

The production area includes some municipalities of Piemonte, in the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. The whole territory is characterized by a hilly morphology and a strong viticultural vocation.


Specificity and historical notes

Historically, "Alta Langa" spumante are the result of a long process of environmental and varietal research. Their production is the result of the arrival in Piedmont, already in the first half of 1800, of vines of French origin, initially poorly seen by local winemakers and then entered the permanent part of the local wine industry.
