Allerona

The Protected Geographical Indication "Allerona", includes the following types of wine: white (with the sparkling, passito and novello variants), red (also in this case with the sparkling, passito and novello variants) and rosé (also available in the sparkling and novello variants).


Grapes

All All Allerona types are produced with at least 85% of grapes from white or red grapes, suitable for cultivation in Umbria


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The white wine is straw yellow, with a pleasant aroma and taste from dry to sweet, fresh, slightly fruity. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume shall be 10,5 %. (11,00% vol. for the newcomer). The red colour is ruby; the aroma is vinous and delicate; the taste is dry to sweet, savoury and full-bodied; the alcoholic strength is 11,00 % vol. (10,50% vol. for sparkling red). The rosé has a vinous and delicate aroma and a dry to sweet, harmonious and fresh flavour; the minimum alcohol content is 11,00% vol. (10,50% vol. for the red sparkling wine). White passito and red passito (15,00% vol. ) have respectively a yellow colour tending to amber and red tending to garnet; the smell is characteristic and fruity in the case of white, with a taste from dry to sweet. The red is more harmonious and velvety.


Grape production area

The production area covers the entire territory of the municipalities of Allerona, Castelviscardo and Castelgiorgio, in the province of Terni.


Specificity and historical notes

This PGI, located in the south-western part of Umbria, takes its name from the town of Allerona, a village of ancient origin located on a hill at 472 meters above sea level. The production area overlaps with that of Orvieto, an area rich in enological history since Etruscan times.
