Colli Aprutini

Grapes

The "Colli Aprutini" PGI wines must be obtained from grapes coming from vineyards made up of one or more vines suitable for cultivation in the Abruzzo region. A quota of at least 85% is foreseen for the productions with specification of one of the following grape varieties, white or red berry: Bombino, Chardonnay, Cococciola, Falanghina, Fiano, Malvasia, Manzoni bianco, Montonico, Moscato, Passerina, Pecorino, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Verdicchio, Vermentino, Aglianico, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo, Malbech, Merlot, Pinot nero, Primitivo, Sangiovese, Syrah. The grapes of the corresponding berry varieties may also be used, non-aromatic in colour, suitable for cultivation in the Abruzzo region, up to a maximum of 15%

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The "Colli Aprutini" white and sparkling white PGI wines (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 10.00% vol.) have a straw yellow colour with a fruity aroma and a dry and savoury flavour. The white passito (16.00% vol.) tends to be amber with aging. The red version (10.50% vol.), also sparkling, combines a ruby red colour with a fruity perfume and a harmonious flavour. The red passito (16.00% vol.) tends to be garnet in colour, with an intense aroma and a sweet, velvety flavour. The new wine (11.00% vol.), on the other hand, differs in its violet reflections. The rosé (10.50% vol.), even sparkling, is pink in colour and is characterised by a persistent aroma and a typical dry flavour. The parameters may vary according to the grape variety used, as specified in the specification.

Grape production area

The geographical area includes a wide and extended hilly area. The clayey-loamy soils, with limited slopes and good exposure, are naturally directed towards viticulture and olive-growing.

Specificity and historical notes

Polibius, a Greek historian who lived between 205 and 123 BC, mentions Abruzzi wine in the narration of Hannibal's famous deeds.
