Rosso di Montepulciano

The Protected Designation of Origin "Rosso di Montepulciano" identifies the homonymous red wine, produced in a single type.

Grapes

The grapes used to make "Rosso di Montepulciano" must come from vineyards mainly composed (at least 70%) of the Sangiovese vine, which is locally called Prugnolo gentile. Up to 30% of the grapes can also be used to make other complementary varieties suitable for cultivation in Toscana. White grapes, however, may not exceed 5%

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

"Rosso di Montepulciano" is a ruby red wine with an intense vinous aroma and fruity and floral notes. On the palate it expresses structure, balance and elegance, with a dry, persistent and slightly tannic taste. Its minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol.

Grape production area

The production area coincides with the territory of the municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, with the exception of the Valdichiana alone. The climate of the area is Mediterranean.

Specificity and historical notes

The wines of “Montepulciano” have an ancient tradition, but it reached the fame in 1600, thanks to Francesco Redi, who celebrated them as "Re dei Vini" (King of Wines). On the other hand, already Sante Lancerio, historian and bottlesman of Papa Paolo III (who lived between 1400 and 1500) celebrated it as a "perfettissimo" wine.
