Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva

The "Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva" Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) includes the homonymous wine and its variant with the "Classico" specification.


Grapes

The production of this wine must be made using, for at least 85%, grapes from the vine Verdicchio. Other grapes are then added to these and harvested in various white grape varieties suitable for cultivation in the Marche region, provided that the quantity does not exceed 15%.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva wine is straw yellow to the consumer, with variable intensity, which after 18 months of aging turns to golden yellow, with green reflections. The aroma is delicate and characteristic, which over time acquires an intense scent of ripe fruit with elegant hints of citrus and notes of honey. The taste is dry and harmonious and disperses on the palate a pleasant bitter aftertaste. If stored in wooden barrels, it can be enriched with a scent that recalls this material. The minimum total alcholic strength by volume is 12.50% vol.


Grape production area

The production area is included in the territories of the two Marche provinces of Ancona and Macerata. It occupies part of the Esine river basin, in a hilly landscape that is about 20 km from the Adriatic Sea.


Specificity and historical notes

The wine-growing tradition of the Marche region, and therefore also the cultivation of Verdicchio, owes its origins to the work of the monks who settled in this area, first the Benedictines and then the Camaldolese. An experience that grew over time, until, in 1881, in the classification made by Di Rovasenda, Verdicchio was declared the most prized Italian vine among the white grapes of the Marche.
