Menfi

The wines included in the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Menfi" are both white and red and are produced, in addition to the basic version, also in the variants Late Harvest and Reserve (for the red). There are also several single-variety variants: Chardonnay, Grecanico, Inzolia (or Ansonica), Nero d'Avola, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Finally, it also includes two sub-area indications: Feudo dei Fiori and Bonera (also Riserva).


Grapes

The white Menfi is produced with at least 75% of Inzolia, Chardonnay, Catarratto glossy white and Grecanico grapes, used alone or together. For Red, on the other hand, a minimum 70% of grapes are required from Nero d'Avola, Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon and Syrah, also in this case alone or jointly. In the late harvest 100% Chardonnay, Catarratto glossy white, Inzolia and Sauvignon white grapes are used, while for the production of monvitigno, this must represent, by itself, 85% of the total. Finally, for wines with indication of the sub-zone, for the Feudo dei Fiori a minimum 80% of Chardonnay and / or Inzolia is required, for Bonera at least 85% of Cabernet sauvignon, Nero d'Avola, Merlot, Sangiovese and / 0 Syrah. In all Menfi wines, it is possible to use, within the residual percentages, also other analogous, non-aromatic grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Sicilia.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The wide variety of wines that make up the Menfi denomination determines a varied range of specific organoleptic characteristics, which make each production unique and which are punctually described in the specification. However, there are also common characteristics. The Menfi wines, for example, are all very balanced from a chemical-physical point of view, with a consequent excellent gustatory yield. All types have in common pleasant, harmonious and elegant aromas, embellished with notes of fruit, flowers or vegetables.


Grape production area

The production area involves the provinces of Agrigento and Trapani.


Specificity and historical notes

The viticulture in the Menfi area has very ancient roots, prior to Roman domination and ascribable to the period of Greek-Greek domination.
