Malvasia delle Lipari

The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Malvasia delle Lipari" includes a white wine and its passito and liquoroso variants.

Grapes

Malvasia delle Lipari wines are produced using grapes from vineyards consisting of only two varieties: Malvasia di Lipari, which must not exceed 95%, and Corinto Nero, for a portion between 5% and 8%.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

Malvasia delle Lipari are sweet, perfect to accompany desserts or meditation. They have an aromatic and characteristic aroma, combined with a harmonious, velvety, soft and sweet taste, which never becomes cloying but stands out for its harmony and persistence. The colour is golden yellow or amber, very pleasant. In the basic version, the minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 11.5% vol, which rises sharply both in the passito (18% vol) and in the liquorice (20% vol).

Grape production area

The wines of the denomination are produced exclusively within the territory of the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. The area is obviously characterized by volcanic soils, which clearly influence the organoleptic characteristics of the wines produced.

Specificity and historical notes

Viticulture in the Eolia Islands, and specifically in Lipari, has Greek origins. According to the historian Diodorus Siculus, the importation into the area of a vine called Malvasia dates back to the sixth century BC and is attributable to a Greek colony.
