Valle d'Itria

The Protected Geographical Indication "Valle d'Itria" includes white wines (also in the sparkling, Spumante, overripe and passito types), red wines (also in the sparkling, overripe, passito and novello types) and rosé wines (also in the sparkling and novello types).

Grapes

Wines with Protected Geographical Indication "Valle d'Itria" must be obtained from vines suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. The single-variety production is reserved to the wines produced for at least 85% with the corresponding grapes, while the remaining 15% can be obtained from another vine suitable for cultivation in the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. The specification of the vine is also allowed for the types sparkling, passito and novello, while for the Spumante the specification can be indicated only for the white berry. For a complete list of the vines involved, please refer to the information contained in the product specification.

Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The Protected Geographical Indication "Valle d'Itria" includes white wines that have a more or less intense straw yellow colour; to the nose they are pleasant and delicate, while the taste is fresh with a taste from dry to sweet. The red is characterized by a color that can vary from ruby red to garnet, pleasant and characteristic smell and harmonious taste, from dry to sweet. Finally, the rosé has a more or less intense rosé colour, with a characteristic, fruity aroma and a dry to sweet, harmonious taste. The minimum total alcoholic strength by volume is 10.50% vol. for white wine, 11% for rosé wine, 11.50% vol. for red wine. The parameters may vary according to the vine variety and the type of wine: for a more precise characterization, please refer to the information contained in the product specification.

Grape production area

The production area is part of the largest area of the Murgia, known as the "Trulli".

Specificity and historical notes

The landscape of the area is characterized by the typical dry stone walls. The stone, together with the vine, is the most important symbol of the Itria valley, a land of ancient winemaking tradition.
