Falanghina del Sannio

The Protected Designation of Origin "Falanghina del Sannio" identifies white wines, sparkling wine, quality sparkling wine, quality sparkling wine classic method, late harvest and Passito. Each wine, with the exception of the Passito, may also be accompanied by the indication of a sub-area: Guardia Sanframondi (or Guardiolo), Sant'Agata dei Goti, Solopaca and Taburno.


Grapes

All "Falanghina del Sannio" wines are produced with grapes from vineyards with a minimum share of 85% of Falanghina vines.


Physicochemical and Organoleptic properties

The White wine (minimum total alcoholic strength by volume 11% vol. or 11.5% vol. for the sub-areas) is straw-coloured, with a fine, floral and fruity aroma and a balanced, fresh and dry flavour. The sparkling wines (11.5% or 12% vol.) have a straw-yellow hue, with possible greenish or golden reflections and a fine and persistent foam; the scent is fine and floral, fruity and fragrant; the taste is fine, fresh and harmonious and can be extra brut, brut or extra dry (only brut or extra brut for the High Quality Classic Method). The Late Harvest (13% and 13.5% vol.) is also straw-coloured, with a floral, fruity and composite aroma and a dry, full and balanced flavour. Finally, the Passito (from 16% vol. to 16.5% vol. for the sub-areas) is golden yellow tending towards amber; intense, ample and composite aroma; sweet or sweet, full and harmonious flavour.


Grape production area

The production area coincides with the entire province of Benevento. It has a predominantly hilly profile, with mild temperatures and good rainfall.


Specificity and historical notes

The history of viticulture in Benevento dates back to the 2nd century B.C. In Roman times, the wines produced in this area were very successful and were sold both in the market of Pompeii and in the market of Rome.
